Skincare Tools: 7 Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid

Have you added a gua sha, a cleansing brush or an LED mask to your routine? The good news: with a little simple care, these tools will last you a long time. The bad news: a few common mistakes can damage them or make them less pleasant to use. Here are the seven pitfalls we see most often, and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: not cleaning your tools after every use

Oil, serum, sebum and make-up residue build up on your tools with every session. Left alone, they turn sticky and become a breeding ground for bacteria. The right habit: rinse in lukewarm water with a mild soap straight after use, then dry with a clean towel. It takes thirty seconds and makes all the difference.

Mistake 2: using harsh cleaning products

Bleach, scouring pads and household detergents can dull natural stone, damage silicone or attack the plastic casing of a device. For most tools, a mild soap is more than enough. For an occasional deeper clean, a wipe dampened with diluted rubbing alcohol, passed quickly over the surface, works well on stone and stainless steel.

Mistake 3: soaking an electrical device

This is the most expensive mistake. An IPX7 waterproof sonic cleansing brush can be rinsed under the tap and used in the shower, but that is not true of every device. An LED mask, a microcurrent device or a facial steamer should never be submerged in water: wipe them with a soft, barely damp cloth, switched off and unplugged.

Mistake 4: putting damp tools away in a closed bag

A closed make-up bag and a tool that is still wet is a recipe for unpleasant smells. Always let your tools air-dry before putting them away. This goes double for konjac sponges: hang them by their cord somewhere airy, without wringing them out, and replace them every two to three months.

Mistake 5: neglecting your cleansing brush

Silicone bristles dry quickly and trap less residue than a bristle brush, but they still need some attention. After each use, run the brush for a few seconds under clean water to flush out the cleanser, then leave it to dry head up. Once a week, wash it with a mild soap, paying attention to the gaps between the bristles.

Mistake 6: storing products and tools just anywhere

Heat and light are bad news for both cosmetics and stone tools left in the sun. Avoid windowsills and the top of the radiator. A skincare mini fridge is a practical solution: creams, sheet masks and rollers stay chilled and all in one place, and you get a lovely cooling feel every time you apply them. Just check your product labels first, as some should not be kept cold.

Mistake 7: sharing your tools

Like a toothbrush, a facial tool is personal. Even after washing, a shared gua sha or brush passes sebum and grime from one face to another. If you are treating a friend to a gua sha session, clean the tool thoroughly before and after, or better still, give her one of her own.

Your simple care calendar

  • After every use: rinse in lukewarm water with a mild soap, then air-dry.
  • Every week: give the cleansing brush and silicone facial cups a thorough wash.
  • Every month: wipe out the inside of the mini fridge and descale the facial steamer with diluted white vinegar.
  • Every two to three months: replace your konjac sponges.

The bottom line

A clean, dry, well-stored tool is nicer to use every day and lasts much longer. Get into these simple habits from day one: your skincare routine will feel calmer, and your tools will stay as good as new.
